TRUE VALUE - A REAL SUCCESS STORY

By BILL GOAD
Jon and Brenda Hester were popular with local residents and many tourists and tourists' children as the managers of the Dock Side Lounge for over 30 years.  Many youngsters who had been chased out of Dock Side for attempting to drink illegally would proudly arrive to celebrate their 21st birthdays with the well known couple.
Finally, in 2004, the couple decided to make a drastic change in their lifestyle.  The old Edisto Supermarket, having sat empty for several years, was longing for a new occupant, and Jon and Brenda got the idea to open a True Value Hardware store.

They fretted over the politics of competing with Builders First Source, but were reassured by BFS that they were more concerned about them being a lumber yard than a hardware store.  After getting the green light, Jon and Brenda set about the task of obtaining the lease, renovating the space, obtaining a franchise and educating themselves about the hardware industry.  They opened in 2005.

Now, 3 years later, everyone goes to the True Value to purchase items that previously could only be obtained by driving to Charleston.  Jon and Brenda and their staff are always knowledgeable and friendly and willing to provide folks with whatever they need.  Their "Bargain of the Month" specials are great was to save money, but items need not be "on sale" to be priced competitively with places like Lowe's and Home Depot.  The Edisto True Value is truly an asset to the communi
ty.
